State of the Game, Update #3?
about 3 years ago – Mon, Aug 30, 2021 at 10:22:44 AM

Hello everyone, Kit here, lead on the ASPS game engine. Things are moving forward both with the Keepsakes game (we just finished an interview last week) and on the ASPS game engine. Let me talk a bit about both the games, and what we're looking forward to in the future.

Keepsakes

There's been a lot of discussion about Widdershin society, amazing artwork has been trickling in, and quick start adventures are being made. Keepsakes will be released in its natural d% format, using the ASPS engine, and we even have a person working on a White Hack version of the game.  We hope to provide you with options for how you want to run your game.

So what is a Widdershin? That's an excellent question that nobody (in the game) has a ready answer for.  All that's known is that for as long as people have made effigies and representatives of "people" - statues, carvings, dolls, etc, there have been Widdershin. When someone puts their heart and soul into one of these figures, and suffers the pain of separation from it, there's a chance for that effigy to awaken, to become a Widdershin.

The Widdershin, at their very core, are good. They know what has happened to them and around them from the moment they were created. They are driven to protect humanity from the Others - the things in the darkness who would hurt them, and protect humanity from perhaps the greatest threat - other people.

In the game, we'll have Widdershin, their magical Keys, rituals, and gearpunk - the strange devices made from odds and ends and bits and bobs which really shouldn't work, but do.

ASPS

A wise person once told me that you shouldn't force your game to fit into the mechanics, that the mechanics should bow to the setting and support it.  The ASPS engine is designed to do exactly that.  The very core of the game is simple, direct, and doesn't force anything on the setting.  Part of the main rulebook however, will be how to craft shells - your setting, and the rules you want to exist for it. As far as I can tell, any genre, any setting, any game can use the ASPS engine and keep its personal feel.

Want to make a more narrative variant of 'everyone's favourite game'? Easy. Want to do a horror variant where people's sanity is on the line? Of course.  Spy Games? Cyberpunk? High Fantasy, Dark Fantasy, Urban Fantasy ... all there. The entire point of the engine is to allow you to make what you want to run and play, not how we say you should run your game.

And, I think, that's what is important.  Some 'generic' game engines provide reams of rules on how to run the game their way.  We won't do that.  We will show you how to run the game your way - the engine's made to facilitate that.  You want to have god-titans walking the world, being living legends?  Sure.  Do you want to have normal humans exploring ancient ruins in pulp fantasy? Totally.

And the sweet thing is that each and every shell will be about 98%+ compatible, allowing you to do crossovers to your heart's content with the bare minimum of needing to do 'conversions'. Since these shells all use the core seed of the game engine, they 'translate'.

So, thank you for believing in our project, and we'll try to be a bit more regular with the updates!
